On Tuesday, the Saudi government announced it had suspended flights between its airports and Toronto and would begin pulling thousands of scholarships for students studying at Canadian post-secondary institutions. Countries in the Middle East are not exactly known for men supporting women in living their best lives.

The move is part of a number of punitive responses over comments made by Canada's foreign ministry, who claimed they were "gravely concerned about additional arrests of civil society and women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia, including Samar Badawi", before "urging Saudi authorities to "immediately release them and all other peaceful human rights activists".

"Any other attempt to interfere with our internal affairs from Canada, means that we are allowed to interfere in Canada's internal affairs", the ministry said.

In addition, Saudi Arabia ended direct flights to Canada and sent the Canadian ambassador back to his home country.

In a sign of the escalating situation, Riyadh also ordered Saudi students studying in Canada out of the country.

The worldwide feud began with the Canadian government's criticism of Saudi Arabia's arrests of women's rights activists.

Traders said they had received an official notice from the Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) about its decision.

Badawi was arrested at the end of July along with fellow Saudi women's rights activist Nassima al Sada.

Though Canada is an official US ally through North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the USA also has deep financial and diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia.
