Variety also notes that this could open the door for appearances by other members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Tom Holland's Spider-Man now resides (under loan to Marvel Studios). Instead of having a Kevin Feige or a Walter Hamada overseeing all the films, each individual Spider-Man movie is spearheaded by its own producer-Palak Patel runs point on Venom and the upcoming Morbius, Pascal spearheads the Homecoming sequel and Silk, and Spider-Man veterans Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing several other Marvel comics adaptations at Sony.

Though Sony Pictures is reportedly cancelling plans for Silver & Black, the Black Cat and Silver Sable spinoff with director Gina Prince-Bythewood, there is an opportunity for both characters to receive solo films in the future, with Black Cat taking priority.

Venom, starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed hits theaters on October 5. But Marvel Studios still doesn't have all of its characters in one box, as Sony Pictures maintains the license for all things Spider-Man-related.

The Spider-Man-centric films has an unofficial name internally at the studio, with Panitch overseeing what they're calling Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters (or, the SUMC).

"We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film", said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures.

Plans have already been announced to make a film based on Morbius, a vampire villain from the Spider-Man comics starring Jared Leto, as well as recruiting Richard Wenk (The Equalizer 2) to write a film based on Kraven the Hunter.

Even though Sony is developing their own corner of a Marvel Universe, there is still hopes that they will cross over with the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Spider-Man's inclusion in the Avengers.

Sony has the film rights to Spider-Man, while Disney retains the merchandising rights.

Black Cat and Silver Sable are going their separate ways. Without the kid-friendly Spider-Man dragging Venom down, the comic book movie was to be Sony's grasp at being taken seriously.
