Transfer Window Failure Could See Hesitant Tottenham Drop Behind Premier League Rivals

Earlier in the day, Pochettino said: "At the moment we haven't received for any player".

It meant Spurs became the first ever Premier League club not to make a summer signing since the window began in 2003.

"Of course it's hard to understand for people that Tottenham didn't sign or sell players, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently".

Asked if Tottenham's players understand the lack of new arrivals, Pochettino responded: "They don't need to understand".

The former Saints Manager also brought up the new stadium in his press conference on Thursday and there are worrying parallels with the Arsenal move to the Emirates Stadium over a decade ago.

Asked why the club have struggled to recruit players this summer, Pochettino replied: "The market was insane".

Deals for players like Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembélé are yet to materialise however and Pochettino said he expected the players who remained at the club following the close of the window to knuckle down. If we have all the squad thinking as individuals rather than as a collective game, you can not achieve what you want and can not succeed. It's a massive challenge for us to try to deliver the best tools for them to get fit and then to prepare them for the whole season, not only for one, two or three games or for one month.

"It's true our targets are always the same level as Manchester United, Manchester City or Real Madrid but for different circumstances we can't achieve that". If we are happy with our squad and can not improve our squad, sometimes it's better to keep our squad together. I am really, really, really, really, really happy. I think the club made a massive effort to try to extend contracts with people like Harry Kane.

Mauricio Pochettino has "no doubt" his Tottenham team will be stronger this season, even if the club fail to make a single signing in the summer transfer window.

"I am so happy in the way they come back to training on Monday". Of course, Son is an important player but it's not a drama that he's not here. It told us we could not expect players to be signed or wages to be competitive while we opposed those ticket price rises.
