Sevilla threaten to boycott Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona

The two clubs are scheduled to play on Sunday night in Tangier, Morocco (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNEWS and ESPN Deportes), and the Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced one day before the game that the match would have no squad restrictions concerning the use of non-EU players.

Arturo Vidal, Malcom and Arthur likely to take Barca's three slots.

La Liga gaints Sevilla have threatened to boycott their Super Cup encounter against Barcelona on Sunday if they name more than three non-European Union players for the match.

"Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF's statement 24 hours before the Super Cup", a club statement said.

Barcelona won both competitions last season so have been pitted against last season's cup runners-up this weekend.

Messi, who will don the captain's armband for the first time after the departure of Andrés Iniesta to Vissel Kobe during the summer, will also overtake the midfield maestro as the player with the most titles for Barcelona. In their last statement for the 2018-2019 season, only three were due to be allowed, without exception.

"The club's legal department is studying the matter and should FC Barcelona submit a team with more than three non-EU players, it would present possible ground for withdrawal on account of an improper line-up".

Usually a two-legged affair, the match will be settled after just one for the first time on Sunday.

Playmaker Philippe Coutinho is a non-EU star, too, however, he has reportedly acquired a passport through his wife this summer.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde was not happy with the rule change either.

NAIJ.com previously reported that Lionel Messi has been named Barcelona captain following Andres Iniesta's exit from Camp Nou.
