Police are blocking off streets and mobilizing hundreds of officers for the anniversary of a deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

August 12th, 2018 marks one year since Heather Heyer was tragically killed by a neo-nazi in Charlottesville in a violent ordeal known as the "Unite the Right" rally. "This year they come w/ badges".

"How does that create a sense of community?"

Washington was bracing for a white nationalist rally on Sunday organized to coincide with the anniversary of last year's racially charged violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Charlottesville city councilman Wes Bellamy attempted to diffuse the tense confrontation between the protestors and the authorities.

After a few minutes, most of the demonstrators began to walk away.

Despite heightened emotions and frustration over the police presence, the city reports no arrests and no violent outbreaks. The rest of the evening remained quiet.

In the downtown shopping district this morning, officers outnumbered visitors. Deploying riot police along the security perimeter, law enforcement went on to erect concrete barriers and metal fences before setting up entry points with metal detectors to screen rally participants.

The group then moved the rally to a neighboring lawn saying they didn't feel safe in the "cage", referring to the barricaded rotunda area. "It didn't make sense past year, and it doesn't make sense now".

Any response from Trump to this year's demonstrations could have consequences as Democrats look to harness outrage for electoral gains.

Fighting broke out between attendees and counterprotesters that day.

The city is expecting large crowds to honor Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old killed when a vehicle rammed into a packed street of counter-protesters in downtown Charlottesville on August 12 2017.

Two state police personnel - Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates - died in a helicopter crash responding to the scene.

The newly installed president of the University of Virginia, James Ryan, apologised for the school's inaction a year ago while speaking at an event to memorialize the anniversary.

The statue and the park in which it's located were the center of last year's Unite the Right rally.

"I remember the police just standing around". I notice that Stonewall Jackson is coming down.

Mr. Trump faced bipartisan criticism for his response in the aftermath of the unrest previous year.

"We've always acted as if black lives never mattered, as if people of color never mattered", Susan Bro, the mother of the counterprotester killed in Charlottesville previous year, told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Friday.

But others said Saturday they were comforted by the security measures.

Attendees of "Unite the Right 2", a follow-up to the controversial far-right protest previous year, have been told to bring Confederate flags, wear body cameras and expect to be provoked.

Ahead of the anniversary of the deadly rally, Heyer's mother Susan Bro said she is proud of her daughter and the difference her legacy is making.

Bro likened losing a child to standing in shallow water as waves roll continually in. Don't respond to the violence if you can protect yourself without it and do not let your guard down, ' she told CBS News. "Every police action that you will see on Sunday will be done with the ultimate goal of ensuring the safety of everyone that attends", he said.
