Washington braces for white nationalist rally and counter-protest on Sunday

Maryland, DC Prepare For Unite The Right Rally

More than 1,500 counter-protesters plan to gather at various downtown locations, including in the same park.

President Trump marked the first anniversary of deadly racial violence in Charlottesville, on Saturday with an appeal to peace and national unity.

Bowser said she recently spoke with an elderly Washington, D.C., resident who told her she was afraid.

Chanting "The people united will never be defeated", hundreds rallied at the University of Virginia on Saturday, an effort they say was meant to demand justice over racism.

The protestors eventually walked away and no arrests were made. Kessler backed off plans for another rally this summer and turned his focus to an event in Washington, D.C. Miska is known for trying a year ago to remove the shroud covering the Robert E. Lee statue at the epicenter of the original rally.

He continued: "What about the "alt-left" that came charging at, as you say, the 'alt-right, ' do they have any semblance of guilt?", he said.

An independent investigation by a former federal prosecutor of last year's rally determined the violence got out of hand, in part, because law enforcement was overly passive and uncoordinated.

Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old counterprotestor, was killed last year when a self-identified Nazi drove a vehicle through a crowd of demonstrators.

Saturday's events in Charlottesville precede a planned "white civil rights" rally set for Sunday in Washington, D.C. The demonstration was planned by Jason Kessler, who also organized last year's rally.

A collective of counter-protest groups will stage a rally earlier in the day before congregating at the park and have vowed to drown out the white nationalists' message.

Two Virginia state troopers who were monitoring the rally were later killed in the line of duty when their helicopter crashed.

Ryan recalled how a group of students and community members faced off against the white supremacist marchers near a statue of Thomas Jefferson on campus, calling it a "remarkable moment of courage and bravery".

"We are unstoppable, another world is possible", "We remember Heather Heyer" and "Black Lives Matter".

Authorities want to avoid a repeat of August 12, 2017, when violent clashes broke out in Charlottesville, Virginia, on a day that ended with three people dead.

Clara Carlson was one of those counterprotesters.

Carlson said police didn't intervene to help her or her friends that night past year. Portland Police is conducting an internal investigation into its use of force on August 4, which included flash bangs, after a June 30 rally there turned into a riot, sending at least four to area hospitals by ambulance.

"You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides", Trump said. In addition, Gov. Ralph Northam declared in a state of emergency in the city and ordered the Virginia National Guard to be on standby should any riots arise.

Attendees of "Unite the Right 2", a follow-up to the controversial far-right protest a year ago, have been told to bring Confederate flags, wear body cameras and expect to be provoked.
