Jonny Bairstow hit eight boundaries and scored freely to keep the pressure on the India bowlers and Chris Woakes also struck eight fours following his two wickets on Friday.

When bad light forced an early close on the third day, England were 357 for six in reply to India´s meagre first-innings 107 - a commanding lead of 250 runs.

Chris Woakes, recalled for this match after fellow pace-bowling all-rounder Ben Stokes was omitted because of an ongoing trial for affray, was then 120 not out, with Sam Curran unbeaten on 22.

Team India will look to bounce back strongly on Day 3 of the second Test against England at Lord's.

Their unbroken sixth-wicket stand was so far worth 99 runs and all the more valuable for the fact that England had slumped to 89 for four on the stroke of lunch.

"I was probably getting a little bit nervous", Woakes said.

In 17 Tests since Joe Root became captain, England have been dismissed for under 300 in their first innings seven times.

"I went from 60 to 80 pretty quickly and all of a sudden started thinking about it". But England " s batting has often proved fallible recently.

Earlier, England's top order again failed with openers Keaton Jennings (11) and Alastair Cook (21) falling in successive overs.

The 45-year-old Tendulkar, who has played 200 Tests for India, said that surfaces are key in Test cricket to check a batsman's capabilities.

Jos Buttler was the one wicket to fall in the afternoon session, trapped lbw for a breezy 24 by the impressive Mohammed Shami who claimed three wickets.

A quick word from Bairstow helped Woakes to compose himself and a pull shot over mid-wicket for three took him to the landmark off just 129 balls.

Earlier, India chose to play with two spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, whereas Cheteshwar Pujara had a horrific return to Test cricket.

Anderson pitches the first delivery down leg and Ashwin tickles it to fine leg for a FOUR.
