Chang Ming Chuang, 66, was savaged by the animal on the shores of Lake Naivasha last night, according to the East African nation's wildlife service.

Wu Peng Te, 62, survived the attack in the Kenyan town of Naivasha.

A Chinese tourist was killed by a hippo while taking pictures on the edge of Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley just hours after a local fisherman was mauled to death in the same area, authorities said on Sunday.

The agency said on Twitter that the killer hippo is "being tracked".

James Omollo told the Star that the foreigner got too close to the animal which turned on him, biting him on the chest.

It is reported higher than normal water levels were causing hippos to wander from the lake on to nearby farms and hotel properties searching for pasture. The bitten man was rushed to hospital bleeding profusely but later died.

Naivasha is a city on the lake 90 kilometres north-west of the capital, Nairobi.

The attacks brought to six the number people who have been attacked and killed by hippos around the troubled water body since the year began.

Kenya has had several months of heavy rains this year which resulted in serious flooding, including around Lake Naivasha.

Tourism is one of the country's main sources of foreign exchange and almost 1.5million tourists visited Kenya a year ago, according to the tourism ministry.
