Kavanaugh Confirmation Hearings Will Begin Sept. 4

It's Official The Date for Judge Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Hearing Has Been Set

"We believe an indictment should not be pursued while the President is in Office", Kavanaugh wrote.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said Friday the confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court will begin Tuesday, September 4.

If the Republicans stick together, they can get Kavanaugh confirmed, but that could be a challenge, given the divisive issues swirling around the conservative nominee, including abortion, gay rights, healthcare and tariffs. "He has a record of judicial independence and applying the law as it is written", Grassley said. After the questioning, there will be testimony from close associates of Kavanaugh as well as legal experts and the American Bar Association.

Carrie Severino, chief counsel and policy director for the Judicial Crisis Network, which has already launched ads in support of Kavanaugh's confirmation, said the Democrats' anger was just their attempt to stall the nomination. More sessions with Democrats are expected to be held in the coming weeks. "It's time for the American people to hear directly from Judge Kavanaugh at his public hearing", Grassley said in his statement. The committee has received about 175,000 pages from the Bush library, but has only publicly released 5,700 pages.

The 184,000 pages turned over to the committee from his time at the White House and as part of Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's work constitutes the largest turnover of documents from the Executive Branch regarding a nominee for the Supreme Court, according to the Judiciary Committee.

The Archives has said its review of some 1 million pages of Kavanaugh records the committee requested will not be fully available until the end of October. The Archives produced the Starr files. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking member on the Judiciary Committee, have held off on meeting with Kavanaugh over the document dispute.

"Republicans just announced that they are scheduling a hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh starting on September 4", Harris said.

The White House on Friday welcomed the news of a set date for confirmation hearings.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said Kavanaugh was looking forward to speaking with Congress, reports CNN. "Judge Kavanaugh looks forward to addressing the Judiciary Committee in public hearings for the American people to view". Kavanaugh himself described his time as Staff Secretary as "among the most instructive" experiences to his work as a federal court judge.

Democratic leaders objected to the schedule, since it indicates Republicans have no intention of releasing documents from 2003 to 2006 in time for the hearing.

Because his career has largely been spent in public service, Kavanaugh has an unusually voluminous paper trail. "This is not how the Senate should approve a nominee for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land", said Sen.
