Google made Smart Displays could possibly be on the way by the end of the year

Since the Amazon Echo Show launched last summer, the $129.99 tablet with an Amazon Echo built in has been modestly popular, at best.

The report from Nikkei, with input from 9to5Google, based on information from "sources" says that Google is "preparing to release a smart speaker equipped with a display for this year's holiday season". Time will tell, so stay tuned. After all, no one can criticise your gift if no one in the known universe has any idea what it's for.

Should the rumors be true, the device would likely run Google's Android Things operating system and line up alongside other Google-made products, such as Pixel smartphones and Google Home speakers. Canalys estimated that Amazon shipped 315,000 Echo Show devices in 2017.

It's going to be an aggressive launch too, with an industry source telling Nikkei that Google intends to ship "some 3 million units for the first batch".

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Google announced Echo Show-like "smart displays" from four companies-Lenovo, JBL, LG, and Sony. Sales of the Echo Show went downhill shortly after, which shows that YouTube integration is something that the money-spending public actually care about.
