Steve Bruce: 'Tottenham Hotspur could have signed Jack Grealish'

Spurs bid £25m for Grealish in the final days of the transfer window, but were told by Villa's new owner Nassef Sawiris that Grealish was not for sale.

Grealish was the subject of intense interest from Tottenham in the summer as they looked to profit from Villa's financial crisis.

He said: 'The owner's personally involved, along with myself, when it comes to transfers and contracts.

Villa hope to have a new contract agreed before the end of the month, Bruce said on Friday. "I hope that it can progress, it will progress".

"Obviously, it's hard at the moment because we haven't got a CEO to do those discussions", Bruce added.

'But the owner, we have learned very quickly, what he says goes. He's really rolled his sleeves up and is actively taking a part in running things, which is good news for everyone'.

He signed a four-year deal at Villa Park in September 2016.

However, keeping hold of Grealish was their best piece of business this summer and Bruce has revealed the midfielder has put the disappointment of missing out on joining a Premier League club and is ready to kick-on again at Villa.

However, investment in the Championship outfit reduced their need to sell their star players, and Bruce has now confirmed that the club are in talks with Grealish over a new contract having turned down a late £30m approach from Spurs. The new owners have said that and I think they want to make a statement on it.

We keep hearing that footballers don't want to play, Jack's knocking on my office at ten past nine demanding that he plays.

.

'I thought last week against Wigan the way he played, the way he handled himself, the way he has been in hard circumstances, has been fantastic.
