Nearly three-quarters of food samples tested showed higher glyphosate levels than what the group's scientists believe to be "protective of children's health", the report indicates.

Both the Quaker Oats Company and General Mills, the maker of Cheerios, disagree with the EWG report's results, defending their products as safe to consume.

An activist group said that glyphosate has been found in Cheerios, Lucky Charms, and Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, Fox Business reported. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labeled glyphosate a carcinogen in 1985, but reversed its position in 1991.

However, many EWG scientists consider levels higher than 160 parts per billion of glyphosate above the safety threshold for children.

Getty Images/Blend Images Oat-based cereals, including Cheerios, were found to contain glyphosate. "No one wants to eat a weed killer for breakfast, and no one should have to do so", he added. And a recent major study, published by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, "observed no associations between glyphosate use and overall cancer risk".

"It is very troubling that cereals children like to eat contain glyphosate", said Alexis Temkin, Ph.D., EWG toxicologist and author of the report. "The government must take steps to protect our most vulnerable populations".

But just last week, a jury in California ordered Monsanto to pay one man $289 million in damages after he claimed the company's weed killers caused his cancer. These suits have been brought by farm workers and others who allege that they developed cancer from years of exposure to Roundup.

The World Health Organization has determined that glyphosate is probably "carcinogenic to humans," this observation has led to the Environmental Protection Agency setting a safety level for the potentially risky chemical. EWG's findings raise the prospect that millions of American children are being exposed to a suspected carcinogen at a time when their bodies are rapidly developing.

Others retailers including Target, Walmart and Amazon declined to comment on the news, but all of them continue to sell the product on their websites. This practice of spraying glyphosate on other crops is a strategy that farmers sometimes employ. It can also be used on produce such as spinach and almonds.

In a statement Fox Business, a spokesperson for General Mills said that "our products are safe and without question, they meet regulatory safety levels". Farmers will spray the weed-killing chemical on crops, such as wheat, oats and lentils, before harvest.

"Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are significantly below any regulatory limits and well within compliance of the safety standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as safe for human consumption".

"Once the oats are transported to us, we put them through our rigorous process that thoroughly cleanses them", the company said in a statement to the media.

But Cook said that General Mills and Quaker Oats are "relying on outdated safety standards".

And herbicides may increase a child's risk for cancer. This, however, does not mean that they are violating the limit as decided by the Environmental Protection Agency.
