On the touch-line, Sarri, wearing a baggy blue T-shirt and track-suit pants, waved his arms in frustration as he implored his players to close Arsenal down in their own half as the Gunners showed signs of fighting their way into the game. The reaction we showed after they went 2-0 ahead and we started the second half well, but then we didn't take our chances.

When Sarri was introduced after replacing Antonio Conte earlier the summer, he said he hoped his team would play an entertaining brand of football.

The disappointing defeat meant that Arsenal have now lost a simply staggering eight of their last nine league games on the road, winning only once in 2018, while they've lost their opening two top-flight matches since the inaugural Premier League campaign back in 1992/93 - on that occasion they finished 10th. "Goal, no goal, we need to continue working", he said. We need a lot of work together and it is my responsibility first, to give this compact block and to give this attacking balance.

"I know we need to improve things and push the players to work, but for me, there are many positive things". But not in the other 15 minutes [when Arsenal scored two goals]. 15 minutes from maybe the 30th-minute was frightful. "I think today is for not happy with the result, but the next matches to prepare well". I want to play and have the ball at my feet.

"I think we have done very well for 75 minutes". So we were in trouble. Otherwise it might be a problem.

On Kovacic's role in the team going forward, Sarri added: "I think he can play in any of the three positions in midfield".

The Blues have won both their first two Premier League games under Sarri but the head coach believes failing to press in their opponents' half of the pitch often leads to them looking vulnerable at the back.

"If we press very high we are able to do well but at other moments, when we are not able to press, we are in trouble".

"We were defending very deep".
