Mr Trump called Manafort a "very good person" as the jury began its second day of deliberations on Friday.

But that's not unusual.

Prosecutors outlined schemes allegedly used by Manafort to avoid paying United States taxes on the millions of dollars he earned in Ukraine and then deposited in bank accounts in Cyprus.

Trump had previously indicated that he found Manafort's treatment by the Justice Department "very unfair".

No one should have harbored illusions about a quick turnaround from the jury. Kevin Downing, Manafort's attorneny, told reporters he sees the continued deliberations as "a great sign for the defense".

"Quick verdicts are not generally associated with lengthy, document-heavy white-collar prosecutions", he said. In some cases, of course, lengthy deliberations could mean that a jury is deadlocked on a verdict, which would certainly be good news for Manafort and a setback for Mueller and his team.

David Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor in Miami, cautioned about reading too much into the questions, noting it was still early into deliberations after 10 days of testimony.

"You have to come to a conclusion on all 18", the former prosecutor said.

Finally, the jury asked if the exhibit list could be amended to include the indictment.

"He worked for me for a very short period of time". A spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Service did not immediately comment.

The government is not, Ellis reminded the jury, required to prove Manafort's innocence "beyond all possible doubt". As for reasonable doubt, he described it as "a doubt based on reason" and told jurors it does not require proof "beyond all doubt". Ideally, the jurors would have been carefully screened for excess partisan sentiment, but that would be extraordinarily hard given that Judge Ellis" so-called "rocket docket'; only spent less than a day to impanel the entire jury.

Ellis was more accommodating on another request made by the press.

Nevertheless, the questions Thursday "reflected a pretty meticulous jury going through the charges top to bottom", Litman said.

They sent a note to the judge asking to wrap up at 5 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. because a juror had an event to attend.

Manafort was in President Donald Trump's inner circle and served briefly as the head of his campaign in 2016.

There won't be any "tangible indication" of a holdout situation until we get to Tuesday or Wednesday, Litman said.

While we can't be certain what the president is thinking, most would agree that it is in his best interest if Manafort does not agree to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators.

In making the request, the media organisations said the information is public under the First Amendment and common law, and would "aid the public's understanding of this important case".

Manafort surrendered to the FBI past year after a federal grand jury indicted him and his business associate Rick Gates.
