IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway stopped after major accident

Driver Robert Wickens was taken to a local hospital by helicopter and racing was stopped after a violent crash on the ninth lap in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Wickens' auto went airborne, tumbling over Hunter-Reay's vehicle and soared over the wall and into the catchfence outlining the track before crashing back to the ground, causing all kids of debris to spread across the track.

Teammate and fellow Canadian James Hinchcliffe was also involved in the crash. Wickens launched over Hunter-Reay's auto and sailed into the catchfence, where the tub of his IndyCar spun several times before crashing back onto the track.

Medical workers attended to Wickens, who was taken to an ambulance before being transported to a helicopter. The impact of the wreck tore out a large section of fencing, forcing the race to be red flagged while IndyCar officials made repairs which they said would take at least one hour.

Curt Cavin, the vice president of communications for IndyCar, said on the TV broadcast that Wickens was "awake and alert" and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital.

James Hinchcliff was caught up in the wreck and held his wrists as he slowly left the vehicle.

Hinchcliffe, of Oakville, Ont., seemed to be in pain, grabbing his wrists as he slowly left his auto. Hinchcliffe would have bled to death if not for the medical team holding the artery together as it raced him from the track directly to a hospital. He declined to comment to reporters out of respect for Wickens. The race resumed at 4:23 p.m. with drivers concerned about getting the full 500 miles completed before darkness set in at Long Pond.

It was also the worst since the accident in 2015 that took the life of Justin Wilson, who was hit in the head by the dislodged nose piece of Sage Karam's vehicle after Karam spun out and crashed into the wall in Turn 1 while leading the race. Andretti Autosport's No. 26 Honda started on the pole at Pocono a year ago with Takuma Sato behind the wheel and Garrett Mothersead the race engineer.

On the race's start, Graham Rahal tangled up with Spencer Pigot as cars tried to get off to a quick start in the 200-lap race. Rahal was assessed a penalty.

Greenwood performed the "The Star Spangled Banner" and his signature song "God Bless the U.S.A." before the race the day after he did the same at the NASCAR race in Bristol, Tennessee. But Greenwood went out on a high note and nailed both.

Will Power began his bid for a third straight Pocono win from the pole. Power now sits fourth in the championship, 87 points behind Scott Dixon.

Days after signing a contract extension with Chip Ganassi Racing, Dixon had one of his worst qualifying performances of the season on Sunday (NZ time), and he will start 13th on Monday in the ABC Supply 500 in Long Road, Pennsylvania, well behind his closest championship contenders. The four-time series champion leads Rossi by 46 points, Newgarden by 60, Power by 86 and Hunter-Reay by 95 heading into Sunday's race.

Dixon starts an unfavorable 13th.
