Redskins Sign Running Back Adrian Peterson

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the team will host Adrian Peterson on Monday.

Peterson began last season with New Orleans but the Saints traded him to the Arizona Cardinals on October 10 after Peterson struggled to find carries in a backfield that included Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram.

Peterson averaged only 3.4 yards per carry last season, but he ran for more than 130 yards twice in six games with the Cardinals.

With a season-ending ACL tear ending potential starter Derrius Guice's rookie season before it began, the Redskins have been looking at the free agent running back pool.

Peterson has signed a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum if $1.015 million with Washington, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN via John Keim, today.

Peterson was cut by Arizona in March after splitting the 2017 season with the Cardinals and Saints.

Jamaal Charles also met with Washington. "Like I said, we have had very [unlucky] situations with our running backs with obviously Guice and Marshall and Samaje".

"We want to get physicals on them just in case", Gruden said of Peterson, Charles and Darkwa. Obviously we played before but his body of work and what he's done in this league speaks for itself, so guys are always going to be eager to pay with him.

Other than Peterson, the Redskins have Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson, and Kapri Bibbs as the main figures left in Washington's backfield, though, none of them is an inspiring option.

Peterson ranks 12th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 12,276 yards. After rushing for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Vikings in 2015, Peterson has gained 601 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in 13 games over the past two seasons. He underwent surgery in May to remove a stabilizing plate in his leg.
