Denmark scrambles together new squad, coach amid pay dispute

Denmark players such as Christian Eriksen are involved in a dispute over sponsorship agreements with companies competing with national team sponsors

The DBU is said to have rejected an offer from Spillerforeningen, the footballers' union of Denmark, to play the friendly with Slovakia on Thursday and the game with Wales under a temporary extension of their previous deal.

Although the names of certain players have steadily emerged in the Danish media, there was no official confirmation of the squad before it travelled. Former Arsenal midfielder John Jensen will take charge for the fixtures.

"We are right here and we want to play football for Denmark as always".

"Now we are working to get the best possible players to play the two matches for Denmark".

'I do not consider the matter between DBU and the players, my yes is not an expression of it, ' Jensen said.

"We do not want to negotiate so close to global matches", Hoyer said.

Players from the Danish Super League are under pressure to show solidarity with the players' union over a dispute that centres on the extent to which the DBU can use individual players in its own sponsorship and marketing campaigns.

The vast majority of players are unavailable, including the entirety of the squad which reached the last-16 of the World Cup this summer.

"We have to solve this conflict now, not just digging the ditches deeper, ' Eriksen said on the Danish Players" Association website.

Last year, Denmark's women's team signed a four-year collective bargaining agreement with the DBU, ending a dispute that saw the cancellation of a World Cup qualifier.

It's also expected that manager Age Hareide and assistant Jon Dahl Tomasson will not be taking charge for the upcoming games, with Euro 92 victor John Jensen filling in.

If Denmark did not field a team against Wales in the Nations League game, they risked being expelled from qualification for Euro 2020.

DBU communications manager Jakob Hoyer insisted this week the organisation did not want to discuss a new deal on the eve of matches and be forced into an unsatisfactory agreement.

So failing to play Wales would nearly certainly see Denmark expelled from the 2020 European Championship.

"All in all, the whole national team, together we enter the agreement and together we save the face of Danish football".

'When I say yes to help here, it's because I feel very, very strong for the national team as an institution, and because I think the most important thing must be that the games will be played after all'.
