Plane quarantined at New York's JFK Airport after passengers fall ill

Eric Phillips, the mayor of New York City, said that approximately 19 people were sick on the flight.

'Emirates can confirm that about 10 passengers on #EK203 from Dubai to NY were taken ill, ' the statement read. Nine passengers underwent additional medical screening on site before being released, it added.

USA media showed images of the double decker A380 aircraft isolated on the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport and reported that the jet had been quarantined.

Sometime around 11 a.m. passengers were escorted off the plane and evaluated by the CDC.

Among those under quarantine at the airport is rapper Vanilla Ice, reported MediaPost's Alex Weprin.

Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, used social media to share live updates of an initial report that dozens of people could be sick on his flight.

Emirates flight 203 from Dubai landed at JFK around 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The airline says about 10 passengers were ill and got medical attention "as a precaution".

Shortly after noon, all the passengers had disembarked the plane.

"Health officials are processing tests now to determine the cause", Phillips continued, adding: "Symptoms still pointing to the flu".

Phillips wrote on his Twitter account that health officials aren't sure how the sickness started.

Passenger Erin Sykes tweeted a video from inside the aircraft, which appears to show panicked passengers being asked to remain in their seats by an Emirates flight attendant. The Emirates Airbus A380, which is a two-tier plane that can hold 520 people, was met by the Centers for Disease Control and Port Authority Police after reports of unexplained illness among the passengers emerged.

The plane had stopped in Mecca, which is the midst of a flu outbreak, Fox News reported.

Health department officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
