Scottish government pledges to roll out 1500 electric vehicle chargers

Dr Sam Gardner of WWF Scotland said: "With transport the single biggest contributor to climate change in Scotland, the Scottish Government's decision past year to phase out new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2032 was the right move for the planet".

Ahead of unveiling her Programme for Government, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced £16.7 million additional funding to help Scotland lead the way in transforming to a low carbon country.

MSPs will spend the rest of the week debating the plans, with other parties also setting out their own priorities.

Mr Salmond is taking the Scottish Government to court over its handling of sexual harassment complaints made against him.

The SNP leader is to reveal the opening date in her programme for government this afternoon, which lays out her plans for new laws and policies in the coming year.

Ms Sturgeon's speech will include "major announcements" on health, the economy and social security, with the first minister saying there was "much more we want to do".

"This programme for government continues the major reforms that are under way in our health, education and justice systems".

Major reforms of health, education and justice announced past year will also continue.

Sturgeon said the Scottish government would steadily increase annual infrastructure investment so that it will be £1.5bn per year higher by then than the amount planned for the upcoming financial year 2019/20.

"Of course we can not ignore the fact that Brexit puts all of our progress at risk, with uncertainty being made worse by the Tories' blundering and the prospect of a no-deal outcome. And it builds on the progress we have made in tackling inequalities".

The Scottish Conservatives said Ms Sturgeon was "getting her excuses in early" by blaming Brexit for "all her government's inevitable failings".

"The SNP is not standing up for Scotland when it cuts teacher numbers, oversees soaring waiting times and sits on its hands rather than tackle our housing crisis and broken economy", he said.

"This session of parliament marks the point where we go into the countdown towards the next Scottish elections".

The Scottish government is to invest £15 million in the deployment of 1,500 electric vehicle (EV) charge points across homes, businesses and the public network under plans outlined officially today (4 September 2018).

While it's welcome to see action on issues that Greens have been calling for - such as giving people the right to vote based on residence, including refugees and asylum seekers, and on the Young Carers Grant - we urgently need action on a number of areas.
