Middle-class income hit an all-time high of $61400 last year, U.S. Census says

Median household income increased to $61,372 previous year, up 1.8% when adjusted for inflation.

Middle class income smashed expectations and reached an "all-time high" across the United States in 2017, according to new statistics released by the United States Census Bureau.

Real median earnings of all male workers increased 3.0 percent in 2017 while the earnings of female counterparts stayed stagnant.

The poverty rate dropped to 12.3 percent, marking a decrease in the poverty rate for the third year in a row, while the number of Americans working full-time jobs went up by 2.4 million in 2017. "In 2017, however, well-worn patterns of inequality reemerged, with stronger growth at the top than for typical households", Gould added.

The nation's economic expansion is now in its 10th year, and Wednesday's figures signal that several years of steady income growth are helping put many Americans on stronger financial footing.

"The equity markets and overall industry sentiment have picked up during President Trump's tenure, but he did inherit a relatively downward trend on the unemployment and income rates, among other metrics like poverty", said Chris Christopher, executive director of consumer economics at IHS Markit in St. Louis, Missouri.
