Toby Alderweireld says he was never close to Tottenham exit

Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld insists he was never close to moving to Premier League rivals Manchester United in the off-season.

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld has insisted that he never wanted to leave the club this summer, despite widespread reports to the contrary.

Sources told ESPN FC that United made a £50 million bid for Alderweireld, £20m less than Tottenham wanted, and negotiations over the Belgium worldwide continued until the Premier League transfer deadline on August 9.

Alderweireld has been embroiled in a contract standoff with Tottenham for much of 2018.

Ahead of Belgium's Uefa Nations League game against Iceland on Tuesday, Alderweireld discussed the rumours linking him with a move away from Spurs over the summer.

Now I am just trying to help Tottenham to the best of my ability.

"At first I struggled to get my place in the team back but being in the first team again is a big positive for me".

With his current deal set to run out at the end of the 2018-19 season, unless the North Londoners exercise the option to extend it by another year, and no progress over a new contract, the Belgian global was heavily linked with a possible Spurs departure.

Given the fact that £25 million would be considered a bargain for a defender as talented as Alderweireld in the current transfer climate, United could face some stiff competition if they return with a bid for him next summer.

'Regarding my future, everything that was said in the press was not right all the time'.
