If he doesn't qualify, Spieth would violate a recent policy requiring PGA Tour members to play a tournament they haven't been to in the last four years.

However, Rose is one of five players who could land the $10 million (£7.7 million) FedEx Cup bonus if he wins the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week. For Woods, this was his best opening round in five years.

By virtue of his return to East Lake - his first trip since 2013 - Bradley will once again reap the benefits of being a top-30 player on Tour.

"I was in control of my own destiny and didn't have it this week", Spieth said after a closing 73 left him tied 55th on three-under. "The belly putter was a tougher transition than I thought, and I kind of fell off the radar there for a little while".

"That's an awesome achievement, something I'm extraordinarily proud of", the Englishman said in a greenside interview after becoming the 22nd man to hold the top spot since the rankings began in 1986.

Bradley shot 20-under 260 for the week with a 64 Monday - play was called off Sunday due to heavy rains - and moved from 52nd to sixth in the FedEx Cup standings.

The Englishman climbed to the top of the rankings above American trio Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas after guaranteeing himself at least second place at the event in Philadelphia. He made that for par to finish the third round in sixth place, three shots out of the lead.

Tiger Woods is off to quite the start in the final round of the BMW Championship this morning. He missed a ton of makeable ones while falling off pace with an even-par 70 Friday and a couple more on the back nine Monday to finish T-6 and secure his spot in the Tour Championship.

Emiliano Grillo, who entered the week at 29th, also dropped out of the top 30. If not, the final round could be scrapped and the 54-hole scores would stand. "I'd hate to round off the season with three seconds, but that could be good enough next week, you just never know".

"It's a game changer for a player like me that's not in the top 50 to get in the Tour Championship", Bradley said.

With the runnerup finish, Rose ascended to World No. 1.

But while Rose edged ahead of him with clutch birdies at the 16th and 17th, the former US Open and Olympic champion came up short at the last, chipped weakly and lipped out from 15 feet for victory.

Last year, Spieth met the 1 in 4 rule and played 24 times. The PGA Tour does not typically announce fines or suspensions. "I'm not sure", said Spieth.

"It's boyhood dreams", Rose added.

Woods caused some more noise - he's been doing that a lot in recent months before the largest galleries at every course - and got within one shot of the lead when he made birdie on No. 9 to go out in 31.
