It noted that the latest version of Celebrity Big Brother, which featured Cheers star Kirstie Alley, was C5's highest rating show of the year, grew its audience by 17% year-on-year and tripled the network's slot average for 16-24 year olds.

Big Brother begins tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm.

"The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last - of either celebrity or civilian versions - on Channel 5", a statement from the channel said.

The UK is one of 20 countries where the show will air in 2018, including the USA where Celebrity Big Brother was recently renewed, four different versions in India and last month's Celebrity Big Brother in Germany which saw a rise of 85% series on series.

The show first appeared on screens in 2000 and was extremely popular, but viewing figures have dwindled in recent years.

The images' release comes after it was revealed the show has been axed after 18 years on British television, Channel 5 confirmed in a statement on Friday. The production company seemed to indicate that it might not be the end of the road, and in its message said it "opens up a new chapter and we are excited about future possibilities for Big Brother in the U.K".

"We'd like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success", Channel 5 added.

The dating show failed to captivate viewers when the channel brought it over in 2012, but the current appetite for dating shows could help revive its popularity.

"Well I have been through this process before because I worked on the previous year on Channel 4 and we buried it".

It took its name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and was initially presented by Davina McCall, moving to Channel 5 in 2010.

"Most importantly, we'd like to thank fans of the show for their support over the last seven years".

"It has been the biggest privilege being a housemate, a victor and a host on my favourite show on the television".

The final CBB series was won by Ryan Thomas, but was overshadowed by the actions of Roxanne Pallett, who accused Thomas of punching her.

The incident attracted more than 11,000 complaints to Ofcom and overshadowed the show's other storylines for the rest of the series.
