Naomi Osaka's trophy presentation at the 2018 U.S. Open was odd, to say the least.

The Herald Sun, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (nws), provoked outrage Tuesday with a cartoon of Williams at the U.S. Open because it portrayed Williams in a style that evoked the 19th-century 'sambo' style of depicting African Americans.

Knight said he had received death threats against his family since it was published, forcing him to suspend his Twitter account. Today it ran the cartoon again, this time on the front cover, along with depictions of more public figures, with commentary alongside each one about why "self-appointed censors" might not want to see them. "The world has just gone insane", he added. "Mr. Ramos' decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-affirmed by the US Open's decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offenses".

While tennis legend Martina Navratilova does believe Williams "completely had the right message about women's inequality", she partly agreed with Djokovic.

The caricature has also sparked renewed debate in Australia about racist and sexist discourse in the highly multicultural nation.

"But if you were talking about my tennis, I think my tennis is not very Japanese".

"I've always thought Kei (Nishikori) was a super good role model, and hopefully I can be that too", she said. "I find it really, a little offensive", added fellow Melbourne resident Nowal Kahsai. "Some of them very, very amusing". When Williams called him a thief and demanded an apology, he docked her a game, a shocking penalty in the final of a Grand Slam event.

Controversy and turmoil has been roiling ever since Ramos gave Serena Williams a violation for receiving coaching during last Saturday's final defeat to Naomi Osaka.

The CEO of USTA, the governing body of tennis in the USA, was asked if she believes female players are held to different standards than men.

"Mark Knight's cartoon depicting Williams destroying her racquet and jumping up and down, with a dummy spat nearby, mocked the star player for her behaviour", the editorial insisted.

Osaka was seen crying during the ceremony, and Williams appeared to lean over and say something in her ear, presumably to console her.

The cartoonist responded to criticism by pointing out that it was only about Williams' behavior on the court and said those pointing out it was racist and sexist were misinterpreting the whole thing.
