Trump's average approval rating is the lowest for any president in modern polling since the 1940s, according to ABC News.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,038 voters from September 6 to 9 for the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

White voters favor Republicans by 48 - 45 percent.

Overall, voters said by 56 - 36 percent that they do not want to see impeachment proceedings begin against Trump. Approval for the Russian investigation lead by Special Counsel Robert Mueller hit an all-time high, with 63% of Americans supporting Mueller's probe, according to the poll taken end of August.

The poll further found that "American voters back Democratic candidates over Republicans 52 - 38 percent in races for the U.S. House of Representatives nationwide".

Each book describes a White House in chaos and Trump aides shielding the president from information in efforts to curb potentially risky policies or actions.

"American voters believe those tales of intrigue coming from the Trump White House, but they think it's wrong to tell those tales anonymously", Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll, said in a statement. Republicans were the only group that trusted Trump more than the media, by 72 to 12 per cent.

The president did so on Monday morning, as he combats a narrative of chaos that has re-emerged with the release of veteran journalist Bob Woodward's book about his White House.

At the time, according to a Quinnipiac University poll, 74 percent of poll respondents said they believed the president is intelligent.

Trump's decreasing popularity with voters outside of the Republican Party can have a major effect in the results of the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump was also the subject of an op-ed written by a claimed senior administration official and published by The New York Times on Wednesday.
