Bird is the only player to be a member of all three championships won by the Storm.

The Storm became the sixth team to sweep a Finals in three games - something the team did in 2010. Each lost Game 3.

What took place on Wednesday night on the campus of George Mason University, in a green-and-yellow arena turned red-and-blue, would have been hard to imagine just two years ago. As a first-time champion, Stewart said she'll have to turn to teammate Sue Bird for guidance on how to properly celebrate.

"When you talk about being a coach on the floor, she's it", said first-year Storm coach Dan Hughes who admits to sharing authority in the locker room and during timeouts with Bird. "She makes your team better". It was a convincing 98-82 win for Seattle to capture the franchise's third championship in history. All the best to the 32-year old.

Despite the misfires, Washington rallied from down 18 points to trailing 72-67 with 6:49 remaining. Unfortunately for the home team, Seattle immediately responded with an 8-0 run and coasted the rest of the way.

The Storm rolled to a 16-point lead after the first half behind dominant performances from Stewart and center Natasha Howard.

"For those fans who have waited 20-something years, they should be excited about what they have going forward", Thibault said. "Their experience showed in this playoff series. I mean, we're the champs". But Stewart drove to the hoop and got the foul on the next possession, then completed the three-point play to halt the Washington momentum.

But this one felt much different. "I felt more and more uncomfortable as we kept going".

"I posted on the board for my team in training camp one of the preseason predictions that was put out there", Thibault recollected.

"I didn't think we'd be back, to be honest", Bird said. We're still new. We're still getting to learn one another. We have a relatively young team. "We have to continue to play with energy and stay motivated".

Students kept rooting for the Storm into the fourth quarter, where the game got close, but never close enough. "I'm super proud of the way we bounced back from a lot of adversity that we faced all season long. We don't feel like we peaked and this is it for us", Delle Donne said.

"It was a successful [season]", Toliver said.

In July Bird said that she believed Stewart opening up about her past had a connection to the maturity she's seen in Stewart this year, also noting that on the court she seemed more confident and driven.

The Mystics were playing in the franchise's first Finals.

It was Stewart and Howard who went off tonight. "And so we will".

EDD: "Yeah, there's been a huge transformation in the culture of this team".

KT: "Quit telling the secrets". "I need to wash things really often".
