This marks the second time this month a pair of Russian bombers have flown close to Alaska.

The US Air Force said on Wednesday that two of their fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers near Alaska.

The bombers were intercepted west of the mainland of Alaska and were accompanied by Russian Su-35 "Flanker" fighter jets and never entered airspace over the United States and Canada, NORAD said.

The latest incursion and aerial intercept followed another Russian bomber flights on September 1 and comes as Moscow is engaged in the largest war games in more than 37 years in Central Asia and the Russian Far East.

The aircraft were "intercepted and monitored" by the US jets until they left the zone, heading west.

The Russian warplanes did not enter US or Canadian sovereign airspace, the statement added. A defense official told the newspaper that the Russian bombers, which entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), south of the Aleutian Islands, may have been practicing cruise missile strikes on USA missile defense systems based in Alaska.

"NORAD employs a layered defense network of radars, satellites, as well as fighters to identify aircraft and determine the appropriate response".

"Tu-95 MS strategic long-range bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces performed scheduled flights over the neutral waters of the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk", the Russian Defense ministry said in a statement to TASS.

Those planes were also intercepted by F-22 fighters after they crossed into the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone south of the Aleutian Islands.

The maneuvers come as Russian forces participate in what The Associated Press reported is the nation's largest-ever military exercise.
