Hurricane Helene ‘THREAT TO LIFE’ warning - United Kingdom to be hit on MONDAY

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to be at hurricane strength when it reaches the Lesser Antilles on Thursday

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to be at hurricane strength when it reaches the Lesser Antilles on Thursday

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Duck, North Carolina, to the North Carolina/Virginia border, with a watch in effect from there to the Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort.

The centre of Isaac passed between Martinique and Dominica with maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour. The storm has nothing to weaken it in it's path until it reaches landfall. Isaac should move farther away from Lesser Antilles today, and then move across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea through the weekend.

The GOES-East weather satellite, which keeps a constant eye on the East Coast and the Atlantic, has captured some breathtaking images of Hurricane Florence, Tropical Storm Isaac and Hurricane Helene approaching the Americas (in that order).

WIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected on Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe by tonight or early Thursday. Tropical storms generate winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour, just below hurricane force. The system has now weakened into a Tropical Depression and convection associated with Isaac diminished considerably. "This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods". Mid September is peak hurricane season and it's not unusual to have multiple storms in the ocean at the same time.

The turbulent weather is coming off the back of one of number of major storms now raging in the Atlantic, another of which, Hurricane Florence, has caused mass evacuations on the east coast of United States this week. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area. "On the forecast track, the center of Florence will approach the coasts of North and SC later tonight, then move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and northeastern SC in the hurricane warning area on Friday", the briefing said.

While now classified as a hurricane, Helene will be downgraded to a storm by the time it reaches the shores of Northern Ireland.

Some coastal flooding is possible in areas of onshore winds.

Isaac became the fifth hurricane of the season late Sunday and was initially expected to strengthen, potentially becoming a Cat 2 storm with 100 miles per hour winds, as it crossed warm ocean waters.

Given its expected slow speed once it rolls ashore, they warned the heavy rain and storm could spread across a wide area. It should dissipate by early next week, the hurricane center said.
