Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus after the defeat to Argentian in Mendoza

The Springboks pulled off a stunning performance characterised by grit and determination to hand the All Blacks their first defeat in the Rugby Championship at home since 2009.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus on Thursday erred on the side of caution in naming his side for Saturday's Super Rugby meeting with the All Blacks.

'We could have lost this game in the last minute, so we were a bit lucky. "Then we lost those two games in a row, and you lose some belief, but we always targeted this game to say "we can turn things (around) and be real contenders at the World Cup".

"We are relieved and proud that we have beaten New Zealand in New Zealand".

South Africa host New Zealand in Pretoria on October 6 in the final round with the 52 000 tickets sold out two months ago. "We could have lost but it gives us confidence because no one beat them here".

However, Erasmus was keen to remind everyone of the reality of where the Springboks are in the world rankings. There are so many teams ahead of us, there is no way we can get ahead of ourselves.

"Our squad of 31 and the management team knows exactly where we stand with one another". We don't think we are better than New Zealand‚ who we rate very highly.

Erasmus praised his side's defensive effort as they made over 200 tackles in the match to keep the All Blacks from scoring a potential victor.

"They put us under pressure and we didn't respond the way we needed".

'The game nowadays is so quick, there is a transition where somebody scores a try out of nothing. We scored tries from nothing and had to defend for what felt like hours.

He added that even though the Boks managed to beat the All Blacks‚ they respect the New Zealanders and are now looking for round two at Loftus in three weeks' time.
