Ferrari have taken the fight to Mercedes this year, with Red Bull getting involved and fighting for top honours, too.

On Friday, the racing body published the latest design proposals, which have been in the works for the past few years as F1 works alongside the FIA and the teams.

High on the agenda, then, is a solution to allow cars to follow each other more easily, which in turn should increase the opportunities to overtake.

"I'm not going to pretend from day one that we will have the flawless solution, certainly from the aesthetics, because try as hard as we can we cannot anticipate every move the teams will make", he said.

As for the future generation racers, Brawn said that the organization is "looking at a new style of Formula 1 vehicle, aesthetically more modern and futuristic, as I don't think we've really captured as much as we could do in that regard". "What we established early on in our research is the cars we have now are very bad in following each other".

"The current cars, once they get within two or three vehicle lengths, they can lose up to 50 per cent of their performance", said Brawn.

Formula 1's owners have stated they want the cars to be "more raceable to increase overtaking opportunities" and for driver's skill to be "the predominant factor in the performance of the auto". "We've got cars now which will maintain 80 percent, so a substantial improvement". Preliminary sketches of how that might make the cars look have gone through three phases. "It frustrates me when a auto in a video game looks better than the vehicle that we are racing out on track". At each stage, as we have been evolving the vehicle, we've had someone we are working with create a graphic representation artist to give us a feel of what the auto could look like.

"That is not to control the development, because it's critical this development achieves its objectives, but why shouldn't we have great looking cars as we're evolving the cars?"

"We see it in other forms of racing, but they are often categories with fixed designs and everyone races the same vehicle. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and the vehicle should look sensational", Brawn said.

When you get into that condition where you're two or three vehicle lengths behind, then you're losing grip, the tires degrade more, and it becomes very challenging.

According to F1, this concept shows "how the halo cockpit protection device can be much more integrated and subsequently more aesthetically pleasing".

The second concept (above) is more refined and stylistically more aggressive.

There are for now no official details on the design of the new auto, but the one in Ferrari livery pictured on the wall behind Brawn does show some differences when compared to the current design, including 18-inch wheels, revised front wings and rear endplates that arch around the wheels.

"Concept 2 is a bit more extreme", he admits. You can't get near it, because as soon as you do you lose performance and fall back, and you see people dropping back and the loss of performance degrades the tyres more than it should do.

Perhaps most notably, the concept featured the new 18-inch wheels which form part of the future F1 tyre tender contract. "They look better but there are a lot of technical reasons why we want them".
