Nigeria's finance minister resigns over forged document

Nigeria's Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has resigned from her position, THEWILL can authoritatively report.

Adeosun, 51, said she was quitting to protect the integrity of the government.

The source cited by the newspaper had said the resignation followed the allegation of not participating in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and obtaining a certificate that the NYSC have disowned.

"The President thanked the minister for her services to the nation and wished her well in her future pursuits", his office said, adding that deputy budget minister, Zainab Ahmed, would oversee her portfolio.

However, in an update, an aide to the minister has insisted that the she has not resigned her position as earlier reported.

In her statement on Friday, Adeosun said her understanding was that she was exempted from the scheme because she had moved back to Nigeria from Britain, where she was born, after she had passed the required minimum age.

The 58-year-old is also a former Exective Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

But Nigerians have taken to social media to express their opinions on the appointment, with many commentators unconvinced about her suitability for the job and the propriety of her appointment.
