Report: Israel Attacks Damascus International Airport [video]

The Syrian News Agency (SANA) confirmed that Israel bombed the Damascus airport on Saturday evening.

A UK-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the missiles hit a weapons depot outside the airport.

"Our air defense systems thwarted an Israeli missile aggression", the source said.

No information about damage or casualties on the ground is available so far.

AFP's correspondent in Syria's capital of Damascus heard a loud blast late on Saturday, followed by several smaller explosions, the news agency reported.

The Israeli military would not confirm the claim, saying it does not comment on foreign reports.

Israel's air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in the war.

Earlier this month, Israel acknowledged having carried out more than 200 strikes in Syria over the past 18 months, mainly against Iranian targets.

Syria's conflict erupted in 2011 and has since killed more than 360,000 people, with millions more displaced internally and to neighboring countries.

The elections are being held at a time when Syrian army troops and allied fighters control some two-thirds of the country following the recent advances in southern areas and Damascus suburbs.

Syrian troops have amassed around the opposition bastion for weeks, although an expected assault appears to be on hold for now as regime ally Russian Federation and rebel backer Turkey try to hash out a deal on Idlib.
