Liverpool punish sloppy Spurs for fifth straight win

Kelly Cates was joined by Jamie Redknapp, Robbie Keane and Graeme Souness to discuss Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday. Erik Lamela grabbed what turned out to be a consolation goal for Spurs in added time.

Winners of their first five league games for the first time since 1990, Liverpool returned from the global break to blank a lethargic Tottenham side that have failed to capitalise on the emotion of their 3-0 win at Manchester United on August 27.

Vorm failed to control the rebound after Mane's cross from the right was turned onto the post by Jan Vertonghen, and Firmino collected himself to poke it over the goal line for his second league goal of the season and second in as many games.

"Tottenham won't be happy but because we were so good, it was hard for them".

Tottenham, meanwhile, lost their first game of the new campaign last time out when they slumped to a disappointing loss to Watford. If we score the goal and it's 2-2 then we talk about character and personality. Tottenham were very erratic at the back and struggled to deal with the pace of the Liverpool attackers.

"Now we have to prove it and do it again, again and again".

"The performance was better than the result and the result is flawless", he said.

However, they were stunned by Watford in their last game before the global break, a result Pochettino said he saw coming.

"I have no clue what exactly happened, but it's something with the eye and for sure at the moment it's not comfortable for him, so we will see". Over 85 minutes we were really dominant.

"Actually I don't like to compare players but we had similar players and questions about Robbo (Andrew Robertson) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain", he said. "Hopefully we can go there and put on a big performance and come back with the win". Fantastic the improvement we had.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has analysed his side's performance away against Tottenham Hotspur last season, and insisted that his faith in Dejan Lovren never wavered despite the Croatian's poor performance. "This type of game shows you that we need to improve if we want to contend in the end to win some title".

"There is no point going through this season saying, "come on, come on, we have to win something, we have to win something".
