Local woman stays in North Carolina despite arrival of Hurricane Florence

The center of Florence is expected to hit North Carolina's southern coast on Friday (local time), then drift south-west before making its way inland on Saturday. Don't relax; don't get complacent. And even though meteorologists sort storms into categories by the strength of their winds, it's actually the storm surge that's most risky, as AccuWeather reported.

"Inland flooding kills a lot of people, unfortunately, and that's what we're about to see", he said.

No matter how devastating or catastrophic a hurricane or typhoon is predicted to be, there will inevitably be some people who refuse to evacuate and insist on riding the storm out-and with Hurricane Florence getting ready to assault the Carolinas, some residents of coastal areas in North and SC are doing exactly that.

Florence's winds weakened as it drew closer to land, dropping from a peak of 140 miles per hour earlier in the week, and the hurricane was downgraded from a Category 4 to a Category 2.

"

"We could be talking about 6 to potentially 9 feet of storm surge."

".

At least 12,000 people had taken refuge in 126 emergency shelters, Cooper said, with more facilities being opened.

Winds and rain were arriving later in SC, and a few people were still walking on the sand at Myrtle Beach while North Carolina was getting pounded.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper warned people not to take the storm's earlier downgrade as a sign the situation is no longer as risky.

McMaster and state officials urged residents eager to return home after the hurricane to be patient, stressing Florence will be a long-term event.

"Storm surge and massive flooding - both are going to be extreme".

"I was feeling fine until I woke up this morning and this is a ghost town", said Kristin Beard, a 40-year-old Myrtle Beach marketer.

More than one million people have already been ordered to evacuate the coasts of North and SC and Virginia, with thousands more moved to emergency shelters, officials said.

The hurricane was seen as a major test for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was heavily criticized as slow and unprepared for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a year ago.

Overall, Young says that evacuees from the coast who have fled to the mountains made the right choice. "We call them disasters because they break things".

Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump tweeted that he had just been briefed on the storm and "FEMA, First Responders and Law Enforcement are supplied and ready".

"We may be facing a situation where hurricane-force winds are weaker than anticipated but perhaps impacting a slightly broader region than once thought", he said. But riding out Hurricane Florence in areas that are being evacuated is not a good idea, especially in light of all the devastation brought about by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Maria in 2017 (Puerto Rico's government recently raised the island's Maria-related death toll to 2,975 people). "We are going to hunker down and stay safe and not stay in mobiles and we will be OK". One moment, it's going to be real bad; next moment, it's slowing down. "Have some pity on us because if you stay here and you have a problem and we have to get out in it, there's a chance that we won't because we can't".

Allison James who lives in Huntersville, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina said that based on reports this area would not be directly affected. Hotel companies house the workers at apartment villages and took them by bus to the shelter, Strawderman said.

Jack Kilbourne, 52, and his son Charlie, 13, were among the group of neighbors who live in large homes overlooking the waterway. "We're able", he said.

Mr Epperson said: "The anxiety level has dropped substantially".
