GETTY WAR GAMES Vladimir Putin hailed his armed forces as he attended Vostok-2018 in Russia

According to previous estimates, about 300,000 troops were set to participate in the maneuvers.

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday promised to strengthen the army and supply it with new generation weapons, as he traveled to watch Russia's biggest war games since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Putin said the war games demonstrate the Russian army is capable of countering military threats, without naming the aggressors.

"Out duty to our country is to be ready to defend our sovereignty, our security and our national interests and, if we must, to support our allies", the president said following a huge military parade after the manoeuvres.

Moscow and Beijing have vowed to stage regular joint war games similar to the massive ones being held this week, Russia's defence minister said.

Putin further stressed that he highly assessed the performance of the Russian army and navy in the Vostok-2018 drills. Additionally, military cooperation will be further developed.

Putin also thanked the Chinese and Mongolian soldiers, who took part in the drills and recalled the historical alliance between the three countries during World War II when they had fought together.

Chinese troops have joined the Russians. The official noted that 91 observers from 57 countries, NATO Military Liaison Mission and EU Delegation to Russian Federation attend the large-scaled exercises.

The exercises, which are taking place in Siberia, Russia's far east and on its Pacific coast, involve 36,000 tanks and come amid hard relations between the west and Russia, and souring ties between China and the US.
