Two Russians deny involvement in UK Novichok poisoning: 'We went there to see Stonehenge'

"Friends have been telling us for a long time we should visit this attractive city", said the broad-shouldered Petrov.

"Salisbury?" their interviewer asked. It's famous not only in Europe, but in the whole world.

"It's famous for its 123-metre spire, it's famous for its clock, one of the first ever created in the world that's still working".

At the same time, Boshirov said Salisbury is a tourist city and has a famous cathedral there, Salisbury Cathedral.

When RT editor Margarita Simonyan asked the pair why they travelled together, implying they might be a gay couple, the men said their private lives were off limits to the media.

Britain last week charged Boshirov and Petrov in absentia, alleging they were agents of Russia's military intelligence agency known as the GRU who were dispatched to Salisbury to poison former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with the nerve agent Novichok.

'We have repeatedly asked Russian Federation to account for what happened in Salisbury in March.

The UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) says there is enough evidence to convict the two men, although it is not applying to Russian Federation for their extradition because Russian Federation does not extradite its own nationals. The UK has described them as agents of Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU.

British security services had named the men as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, but believed they were aliases.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Russian intelligence agencies have in recent years identified and located multiple Russians who were CIA informants and now live in the USA under a secret agency program. We're ordinary businessmen trying to make it in the fitness industry.

He claimed his life had been turned "upside down" and added: "We're afraid of going out, we fear for ourselves, our lives and lives of our loved ones".

Peskov said he hasn't yet had time to watch their interview and said he didn't know if Putin saw it.

The Skripals and a police officer fell seriously ill. Police believe the perfume bottle had been specially adapted to carry the poison.

Their first public appearance, a September 12 interview with the Kremlin-funded RT channel, contained a few head-scratchers.

The men had some physical similarities to the men shown in British police images.

An except of the full interview was shown on RT News on Thursday morning, and an additional transcript can be seen here. When you go through customs, they check all your belongings.

Other documents published by the two sites included an Aeroflot flight manifest that indicates the two men bought their tickets at the last minute, contradicting their claims that the trip to Salisbury had been planned long ago.

They spent no more than an hour in Salisbury and returned to London after abandoning a plan to visit the Stonehenge monument because of "muddy slush" and snow in the city, Petrov said.

British police used surveillance camera footage from airports, transit stations, and elsewhere to outline the pair's movements.

"I think they're just two guys who have been blamed for this - now they're in shock, they're scared, they don't know what to do".

"We have seen no change in our British counterparts' position since then", the Russian presidential spokesman concluded.

April 5, afternoon - A statement on behalf of Yulia is released by Metropolitan Police, in which she says her strength is "growing daily" and that "daddy is fine". Leaving Salisbury at approximately 4.10pm and arriving in Bow at approximately 8.05 pm.

They had been for lunch at a restaurant in central Salisbury on 4 March when they were found "in an extremely serious condition" on a bench outside the restaurant. They might have been spotted on the same street as the Skripals' house, they said, but they had no idea the former spy lived there.
