A series of explosions and fires killed a teenager, injured dozens, damaged homes and forced thousands of people to be displaced.

Friday, officials at Vermont Gas reassured customers here that this won't affect them.

"We're very interested to understand the operations of Columbia Gas", he said. They say their system is up to date, modern and created to ensure that when gas flows into a customer's home, it's flowing at the appropriate pressure.

A technician who punctured a gas line was to blame for this 2012 blast in Springfield that destroyed a nightclub and damaged almost a dozen other buildings and injured 17 people.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency for the area and put Eversource Energy, another utility, in charge of recovery efforts after state and local officials said they were unsatisfied with Columbia Gas' response.

Sumwalt said NTSB investigators expect to be on site up to ten days but a final report about what happened could take up to two years to complete.

Firefighters and gas workers returned Saturday morning to a commercial area on the south side of Lawrence where they were seen opening manholes, testing gas levels and trying to gain access to businesses.

Local officials also warned about donation scammers.
