The army is said to have wounded at least 248 others taking part on Friday in weekly protests at the fortified Gaza Strip boundary.

A 14-year-old was among two people shot dead by Israeli fire in new clashes along the Gaza border on Friday, the health ministry said.

The teenager was shot east of Jabalia in northern Gaza, the ministry said, while a medical source named him as Mustafa Abed Rabbo. "Our forces struck [two] Hamas posts in Gaza in response", the IDF said on Twitter.

Shadi's father Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Al today told Reuters that his son had died as a martyr.

Today's dead brings the number of Palestinians killed to 177 since the sometimes violent demonstrations were launched on March 30 to press demands against Israel.

"There were too many false realities that were created - that people worship - that I think needed to be changed", he said. Another Palestinian, 28-year-old Hashem Hassan, said he saw Abdel-Al being shot 70 meters from the fence: "He threw a few stones, which flew just a few yards".

Israeli soldiers today killed three protesters at the border including an 11-year-old boy, Palestinian medical officials say.

Since March 30, Gaza has also seen shelling exchanges between the coastal enclave's Islamist Hamas rulers and Israel.

Asked about Abdel-Al's death, a military spokeswoman said only that troops had kept to their open-fire regulations.

Palestinian protesters watch as tear gas canisters fired by Israeli forces comes through black smoke of burning tires during a demonstration along the border fence east of Gaza City on September 14, 2018. An Israeli soldier was killed by Palestinian sniper fire.

The US has backed its ally Israel in accusing Hamas of staging the mass-mobilisation to distract from Gaza's poverty and governance problems and provide cover for armed Palestinian border incursions. Israel has accused the Hamas terror group of encouraging the protests and using them as cover to attempt to carry out terror attacks, including firing at troops and attempting to breach the border fence. There was no word of casualties.

The protest campaign calls for an end to the 11-year Israeli blockade on Gaza and for Palestinian refugees' right of return to the lands that their families fled during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.

United Nations and Egyptian mediators have been trying to reach a deal to calm Gaza, where Israel and Hamas have fought three wars in the last decade. The brokering efforts have been complicated by Hamas's feuding with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has restricted funding to Gaza.
