A White House spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday afternoon. Beijing has issued a list of another $US60 billion of American products for retaliation if Trump's next tariff hike goes ahead.

"We are under no pressure to make a deal with China, they are under pressure to make a deal with us", Trump tweeted.

"We encourage China to address the long standing concerns raised by the United States".

Trump has also threatened another round of tariffs on $267 billion of Chinese goods. Some have advocated a more cautious, diplomatic approach.

Trump had already directed aides to proceed with tariffs, despite Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's attempts to restart trade talks with China, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

US President Donald Trump is reported to have chose to impose another $US200b of tariffs on China. He wants China to buy more American products, open up China to more USA investment, and stop stealing US intellectual property, among other things. The Journal reported that the Chinese had hoped that any final decision on tariffs would be delayed until after the next round of talks.

US President Donald Trump has already imposed 25% tariffs on steel imports and 10% on aluminum, as well as 25% on $50 billion in goods from China.

Chinese and US officials end trade talks in Washington without major breakthrough; FBN's Susan Li reports.

The US president has vowed to target an additional $200 billion of Chinese goods, which would include a tax on electronic parts and consumer goods.

China welcomed the offer, saying that both governments were discussing details for a new round of negotiations. "Talks without action won't do the trick".

The U.S. ran a $233.5 billion deficit in goods trade with China during the first seven months of the year, an 8 percent increase compared with the same period in 2017.

Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow told Fox News on Wednesday that the United States government had received information that "the top of the Chinese government wished to pursue talks" prompting Mnuchin to send an invitation.
