Strawberry needle scare: Australia probe as 'vicious crime' widens

Western Australia strawberry producer Mal's Black Label is the latest grower to have been embroiled in the needle scandal.

Queensland mother Angela Stevenson said her nine-year-old son Mason bit into a strawberry with a needle in it, and she found another metal object while cutting up a piece of the fruit to feed to her 12-month-old baby Koby-Rose.

There were no reported injuries, but all remaining stock has been removed from all the supermarket's locations.

A $100,000 reward has reportedly been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Australia's strawberry spikers, amid fears up to six brands may have been contaminated with needles and pins.

A force spokesperson said: "Whilst three brands - "Berry Obsession", "Berry Licious", and "Donnybrook Berries" - have been recalled nationwide, it is now believed the contamination may also affect - "Love Berry", "Delightful Strawberries", and "Oasis" brands of strawberries".

The strawberries were produced and packaged in Western Australia.

Queensland Police said in a statement the alleged incident was not linked to the ongoing strawberry sabotage crisis that has seen fruit stripped off Queensland shelves.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has also ordered the food safety watchdog to investigate Queensland's handling of the strawberry spiking saga.

Numerous lines of fresh strawberries have been pulled from shelves across the country.

Australia exports about 4 per cent of its strawberry...

Foodstuffs said it was confident there was no product in its stores that have been affected by the Australian action.

The New Zealand strawberry season would kick off shortly, filling the supply gap, a spokesman said.

A health warning to throw out or cut up strawberries remains in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

He told officers he found it in his sink after preparing strawberries for his family and did not recall it being there beforehand.
