Pentagon sees China as 'growing risk' to U.S. defense industry

U.S.-China tensions rise over South China Sea warships

Days after a United States Navy ship nearly collided with a Chinese warship in the hotly-contested South China Sea, the US Navy's Pacific Fleet is proposing to unveil a global show of force as a stern warning to Beijing.

The proposal, which for now would be only a draft and totally confidential, would consist in carrying out a naval macro-operation during a week in November. The goal is to carry out a highly focused and concentrated set of exercises involving United States warships, combat aircraft and troops to demonstrate that the United States can counter potential adversaries quickly on several fronts.

While the vice president stressed the threats posed by China to American interests, he emphasized that the United States desires a productive relationship with Beijing.

The plan proposes sailing ships and flying jets near China's territorial waters in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait to show the "right to free navigation" in worldwide waters.

U.S. -China military tensions have also been rising in recent weeks as the trade war between the two nations worsens, fuelling concern in Beijing that the U.S.is intent on stopping China from threatening American dominance of the Indo-Pacific.

Pence will say the USA intelligence community has determined that China is targeting US state and local governments and officials to exploit any divisions between federal and local levels on policy. If the proposal is approved, the operation could even reach the Russian doors, he adds.

The Chinese defense ministry said Tuesday it opposes the US warship's entry into the waters "around China's islands and reefs".

The Chinese destroyer confronted the U.S. Navy destroyer in "an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver", U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman Lt. Cmdr.

The US warship Decatur almost collided with a PRC Navy vessel while performing a freedom-of-navigation operation (FONOP) in the South China Sea on Sunday. Defense Secretary James Mattis and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will take into account the diplomatic implications of each mission, officials said.

The Pentagon, however, has not commented on the proposal, CNN said. "As the secretary of defence has said on countless occasions, we don't comment on future operations of any kind", Lieutenant Colonel David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesperson said.
