Vitamin D supplements won’t prevent fractures or boost bone density

Vitamin D pills would only be useful for high risk groups

"Since the last major review of the evidence in 2014, more than 30 randomised controlled trials on vitamin D and bone health have been published, almost doubling the evidence base available".

"What is important to keep in mind is that those with low vitamin D were not represented in this meta-analysis, and vitamin D supplementation - repletion, actually - is still necessary for those with low vitamin D levels, regardless of age", said Dr. Minisha Sood, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

The evidence is now so clear that there is little point investigating further and doctors should stop telling millions of people to take supplements, the scientists say.

Researchers said taking the supplement would only be useful for high risk groups who want to prevent rare conditions such as rickets and osteomalacia, which can occur due to vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D supplements, long pushed as benefiting bone health, can't be justified for most people except perhaps for those at high risk of osteoporosis or brittle bone disease, according to a new meta-study published on Thursday in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal.

Vitamin D supplementation may not improve bone density or prevent fractures and falls in adults, a large new analysis suggests. Even when lower thresholds were assessed, there was still reliable evidence that vitamin D does not reduce falls by 7.5 percent and total fracture by five percent.

Between late March/early April to the end of September, most people can get all the vitamin D they need through sunlight and a balanced diet.

They said their study was the largest meta-analysis ever carried out, with data from 81 randomised controlled trials.

Bolland explained that this has doubled the volume of information available on vitamin D and bone health. She is clinical chair in health services research at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

They said in the paper: 'In summary, vitamin D supplementation did not have meaningful effects on fracture, falls, or bone mineral density, and future trials are unlikely to alter these conclusions. In addition, the authors conducted more than 60 subgroup analyses to verify their findings.

The findings add to previous research suggesting that vitamin D supplements do not prevent disease for the majority.

Bolland suggests doctors and health officials now recommending the vitamin to older patients as a way to prevent osteoporosis or brittle bones should stop.

Because of the small number of trials with baseline 25OHD below 25 nmol/L (total of 831 participants), more research might be needed into the effect of vitamin D supplementation at these levels.

Vitamin D is found in a variety of foods.
