NOAA predicting mild winter in New England – Boston News, Weather, Sports

Temperatures are not expected to dip below average anywhere in the country from December to February, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced Thursday in its "Winter Outlook". Meteorologists predict there's a 75 percent chance it'll be around this winter. "Although a weak El Nino is expected, it may still influence the winter season by bringing wetter conditions across the southern United States, and warmer, drier conditions to parts of the North".

-No part of the U.S.is favored to have below-average temperatures.

On its temperature forecast map, the Carolinas and much of the southeast and Mid-Atlantic are all colored white, while the rest of the country is cast in reds and oranges, since those areas are expected to be warmer.

A mild winter could be in store for much of the United States this winter according to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.

Precipitation is expected to be above normal across the southern tier of the U.S., extending up into the Mid-Atlantic.

Drought conditions may worsen in much of Southern and Central California, although the north coast of California may see some relief, according to NOAA. Northern Florida and southern Georgia have the greatest odds for above-average precipitation this winter.

Drought conditions are forecast to stay put this winter in the Southwest, Southern California, central Great Basin, central Rockies, Northern Plains and portions of the interior Pacific Northwest. NOAA'S next update will be available on November 15th.

The winter, it said, will be "colder-than-normal... from the Continental Divide east through the Appalachians".

-Even during a warmer than normal winter, it will still get cold and snow is still likely to occur. It added: "So just how cold will it be?"

In the U.S. Winter Outlook for December through February, above-average temperatures are most likely across the northern and western U.S., Alaska and Hawaii.

This video below explains El Nino further and provides greater details about NOAA's winter outlook.

"Contrary to the stories storming the web, our time-tested, long-range formula is pointing toward a very long, cold, and snow-filled winter".
