It has been reported that Academy Award victor Judi Dench will join the already star-studded cast of an upcoming film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats.

Dench was set to play Grizabella in the original West End production, but had to withdraw from the show after snapping her achilles tendon. Dame Judi is set to play Old Deuteronomy, the leader of feline tribe the Jellicles who's captured by Macavity (the bad guy cat who'll be played by Idris Elba), while Sir Ian plays Gus the Theatre Cat.

The Oscar-winning actress will reportedly play ancient cat Deuteronomy - a role traditionally played by a man - in the film, which is due for release next year.

Dench's recent credits include Victoria & Abdul, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films, Philomena, reprising as M in the Bond movie Skyfall, and Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express.

Idris Elba joined "Cats" on October 16, adding to a star-studded cast that already included Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Taylor Swift.

Tom Hooper will direct from a script he co-wrote with Lee Hall.

First performed in 1981, Cats is the fourth longest-running show in Broadway as well as West End history. The project is based on "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S. Eliot. Deuteronomy is a large old cat who has lived many lives and buried "nine wives", though that line will have to change in the film. Sing us a song in the comment section below!
