German ex-nurse admits to killing 100 patients

Nurse on trial for allegedly killing 100 patients at two German hospitals

He is accused of killing the patients with legal drugs out of "boredom".

Niels Hoegel, 41, is accused of murdering patients at a hospital in the north-western city of Oldenburg between 1999 and 2002 and at another in nearby Delmenhorst from 2003 to 2005.

"It is like a house with dark rooms - we want to bring light into the darkness", he said.

A minute of silence was held in court for the victims, as Hoegel listened with his head lowered.

Authorities subsequently investigated hundreds of deaths, exhuming the bodies of former patients.

"They had everything they needed (to stop him) - you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes", Marbach, the grandson of one of the patients, told AFP.

"I should have quit", he said.

Högel was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders.

A second trial followed in 2014-15 under pressure from alleged victims' families. In January, prosecutors brought new charges against him for killing another 97 people.

It was then that Hoegel confessed to his psychiatrist at least 30 more murders were committed in Delmenhorst, prompting investigators look at suspicious deaths in Oldenburg.

Investigators believe the actual toll could top 200, though the true number may never be known because several presumed victims' bodies were cremated before they could be autopsied.

Hoegel said during his time as a nurse, he would give patients non-prescribed drugs to show off resuscitation skills, or because he was bored.

The choice of victim appears to have been entirely random, with their ages ranging from 34 to 96.

But he surprised the court on the first day of his trial by admitting to all 100 murders he is charged with, at the Delmenhorst and Oldenburg hospitals.

Additional convictions could make it harder for Hoegel to get parole. Niels Högel is now serving a life sentence for killing two patients.

More than 120 relatives of the victims are co-plaintiffs in the trial, which could last until May. 'The aim is for Hoegel to stay in custody as long as possible'.

Police have said that, if local health officials had not hesitated in alerting authorities, Hoegel could have been stopped earlier.

Authorities are pursuing criminal cases against former staff at the two medical facilities.
