It also said that half of the plant population since the start of our civilisation has been wiped out.

"'The Living Planet Report 2018 provides a platform for the best science, cutting-edge research, and diverse voices on the impact of humans on the health of our Earth". In the last 50 years, 20% of this region, which is the largest tropical rainforest on the planet, has disappeared, and in the previous 30 years, half of its shallow-water corals have also gone extinct.

Every two years the Living Planet Report is collected for the WWF with indicators from the Zoological Society of London, and tracks nearly 17,000 populations of 4,000 vertebrate species to establish "trends in global biodiversity and the health of the planet". In Central and South America, populations declined overall by 89 percent, while in South Asia and Oceania, populations declined by 64 percent.

The species monitored were vertebrate species, or animals with a backbone, with database containing information on over 22,000 population of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.

The bi-yearly Living Planet Report released Monday documents the state of the planet, including biodiversity, ecosystems and the demand on natural resources. "It's time to balance our consumption with the needs of nature, and protect the only planet that is our home".

The report highlights that over recent decades, human activity has also severely impacted the habitats and natural resources which wildlife and humanity depend on such as oceans, forests, coral reefs, wetlands and mangroves.

In Canada, the depletion in wildlife is a result of the following factors: habitat loss, climate change, pollution, invasive species, unsustainable harvest, and cumulative and cascading effects.

India is one of the worst affected by biodiversity loss even though its per capita global ecological footprint is among the lowest in the world, WWF experts said, commenting on the report's findings.

A new global deal should be secured, backed by commitments from governments and businesses. The U.N. warned climate change poses "an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies and the planet" that will "require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society".

"One was the realisation that climate change was unsafe for the economy and society, not just polar bears", he said.

"Pakistan is experiencing a steady rise in carbon emissions, which contributes to global issues such as climate change and global warming", he said. This is actually now jeopardising the future of people.

African elephant populations in Tanzania have declined by 60% between 2009 and 2014, mostly due to poaching for their ivory. The WWF has urged the 196 member nations of the Convention on Biological Diversity to consider a range of targets when they meet in Egypt in late November. Four years ago, the decline was 52%. The main culprits of the destruction are overexploitation and agriculture.

Populations of black and white rhinos are down by an average of 63% between 1980 and 2006, with the illegal wildlife trade for their horns the biggest threat facing the animals.
