Marginal Improvements in Delhi Air Quality

Environment ministry forms teams to report incidents of pollution

This represents a slight improvement over Thursday night's levels which, at 410, had crossed the "severe" mark.

Winter pollution episodes are set to get worse with moisture content in the air set to peak by Sunday.

The PM2.5 level was recorded at 210. "Winds are calm and it is favourable for stagnation of pollution". There would be two teams each in Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram.

Four areas in Delhi recorded "severe" air quality while 29 areas recorded "very poor" air quality, according to the CPCB data. Localities across Delhi such as Bawana, Ashok Vihar and Anand Vihar were also highly polluted, with AQI levels above 390.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Environment Minister Dr Harshvardhan informed that the teams will proactively and aggressively report the incidents of pollution for the next ten days. The Supreme Court-appointed EPCA said that it is considering imposing more restrictions, including a ban on the entry of trucks in Delhi, if the air quality is to fall further. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has banned construction activities in the city between November 1 and November 10. "This is mainly due to weather condition as stubble burning is marginal", it said. The stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana has about 30 per cent impact on Delhi's air quality, say experts from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Harsh Vardhan said that stubble burning had reduced by 30 per cent over past year, which was good, but not enough.

According to early warnings, wind speeds over Delhi may increase slightly to 8-10 kmph on Friday.

The SAFAR said the AQI of Delhi-NCR would continue to remain in the upper range of the "very poor" category in the next three days.

The 10-day campaign was launched by the Union minister for environment, forest and climate change, Harsh Vardhan on Thursday, when the air quality in Delhi was edging back towards "severe" levels after having dropped from "severe" to "very poor" on Wednesday.
