Fox called it an "unfortunate distraction" that has been addressed.

But the network statement issued Tuesday did not explain how it was addressed. Hannity himself had tweeted: "To be clear, I will not be on stage campaigning with the president".

Upon taking the stage, Mr Hannity pointed at all of the media and said: "By the way, all of those people in the back are fake news". He played the role of cheerleader from the side as the crowd waited for Trump's appearance.

Country singer Lee Greenwood performed Trump favorite "God Bless the USA" on Sunday in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and appeared with the president Monday night in Missouri.

President Donald Trump implored Republicans today to help preserve "fragile" GOP victories that could be erased by Democrats as he closes out a midterm campaign that has been defined by his racially charged rhetoric, hard-line immigration moves and scattershot policy proposals.

Hannity hugged the president when he came onstage and, after echoing Trump's traditional epithets about the media, recited some economic statistics.

A Fox News spokeswoman did not immediate return a message seeking comment.

"It's all fragile. Everything I told you about, it can be undone and changed by the Democrats if they get in", Trump told supporters on a telephone "town hall" organized by his re-election campaign.

Trump, who had appeared live on Hannity's show during a backstage conversation just moments before, summoned the Fox News host to the stage, and he obliged.

Hours earlier he had denied that he would be campaigning at the event but did admit he would be there covering the final push, as he had in 'every election past'.

The host added, "When people say that there's no difference and when Fox tries to consider itself a news organization, they have some complications at moments like this".

One Fox News employee described to CNN Business the scene at the NY headquarters of Fox News at the time, as a number of journalists inside the company's news division watched the episode unfold live.

But Monday night's appearance at Trump's rally was one of the clearest examples to date of Hannity's growing invincibility at the network.

Fox News personality Sean Hannity and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh were also slated to attend.

When it was done, White House Communications director Bill Shine, a former Fox News Channel executive, high-fived Hannity, according to the White House pool report. "They do fantastic work day in and day out in a fair and balanced way and it is an honor to work with such great professionals".

Hannity, whose evening show attracts more than 3 million viewers, is the network's most popular opinionator, and his program is typically the most-watched cable news talk show.
