Prince Charles 'programmed' William and Harry to pick up rubbish

"We were in Norfolk on school holidays, and went out litter picking with him".

Prince William and Prince Harry have revealed the unusual activity their father Prince Charles encouraged them to do as kids while on family holidays in Norfolk.

The Prince of Wales, well known for his fervent interest in environmental causes, gave his sons steel spikes and black plastic bags and set them to work.

In a new documentary he shares that whenever he sees a piece of litter he makes a point of picking it up, a habit his classmates used to pick on him for.

Back when they were schoolboys, William and Harry went on a vacation with their dad to the English county Norfolk where they went litter-picking. We thought, 'This is perfectly normal, everyone must do it'.

Harry confesses that he was "programmed" to collect litter because of the positive influence of his father. Harry said, "He's done an wonderful job".

Charles has been vocal on the environment for decades and has campaigned on issues like climate change, pollution and farming practices.

"He does live the way he advocates so, until someone comes up with an electric plane - it's impossible to get around the world, for instance, without using a plane that's there", the Duke argues.

William admits that his father was affected by the backlash he received for his environmental views, which saw him ridiculed for supposedly talking to plants.

He took us litter-picking when we were younger.

"I used to get taken the mickey out of at school for just picking up rubbish", Harry says in the BBC's Prince, Son And Heir: Charles At 70.
