Irish horse The Cliffsofmoher has been euthanased on the Flemington track after sustaining an injury to its shoulder during the Melbourne Cup.

The British horse The Cliffsofmoher was put down after he fractured his shoulder as it went past the post the first time.

Racing Victoria, the governing body in Australia's southern state, said The Cliffsofmoher "was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained".

The condition of The CliffsofMoher, which was being ridden by star English jockey Ryan Moore, is not yet known.

Appleby's Melbourne Cup win came just days after he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday with Line of Duty, surviving an inquiry/objection.

Racing Victoria said these incidents occurred "infrequently" and insisted Victoria has one of the "best safety records in the world in racing".

"Cliffsofmoher, he's melting like an ice-cream at the moment", Seven commentator Richard Freedman said.

Sheikh Mohammed's personal Melbourne Cup drought had stretched three decades back to 1988 when he was first represented in the Cup by Authaal, trained by the late Colin Hayes, which finished 19th.

He first tried to win the Melbourne Cup back in 1988, and through the Godolphin royal blue colours since 1998.

Marmelo and A Prince of Arran ran second and third respectively, as race favourites Yucatan and Magic Circle failed to deliver on pre-race expectations.

For jockey Kerrin McEvoy, it is his third Melbourne Cup, and he becomes the first jockey to complete the Everest-Cup double.

"Internationally we have campaigned over here the last three years now and have been competitive but we have always learnt each trip what horse we felt was going to be needed on the big day".

The most catastrophic year for the race was 2014, when six-year-old Japanese thoroughbred Admire Rakti collapsed straight after the Melbourne Cup and died in its stall, while Araldo broke his leg on a fence after taking fright and was euthanased.

"Unfortunately these things can happen to a horse galloping around the field at home", he said.
